It's a good time to be a Krimi fan...
After Eureka had released the Dr Mabuse movies of the 1960s as well as CCC's (Bryan) Edgar Wallace films, Vinegar Syndrome is now following suit: They have just announced that pre-order has started for a set of three Rialto Edgar Wallace films for their new "Krimis in B&W" Blu-Ray boxset: DAS INDISCHE TUCH (THE INDIAN SCARF, 1963), DER ZINKER (THE SQUEAKER, 1963) and ZIMMER 13 (ROOM 13, 1964).
Two of those films are directed by Alfred Vohrer, one of them by Harald Reinl. And without spilling the beans too much... one of those three choices had also made it to my list of Top 5 Edgar Wallace films for Krimi! 2 that is out now.
My understanding is that the transfers will be identical to the German Blu-Ray sets but this release is full of specially produced new features that include:
- Commentary track with film historian Samm Deighan for The Indian Scarf
- Commentary track with film critic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas for The Squeaker
- Commentary track with film historians Jonathan Rigby & Kevin Lyons for Room 13
- "A New Kind of Score" (18 min) - a new interview with Philip Thomas on the work and legacy of his father, composer Peter Thomas
- "Hallo, hier spricht Peter Thomas!" (43 min) - a documentary from 2011 on composer Peter Thomas, directed by Oliver Schwehm
- "Behind the Image" (10 min) - a new interview with Rialto camera assistant Joachim Gitt
- "Wallace auf Deutsch: From English Paperback to German Box Office" (29 min) - a new featurette with film historians Kim Newman and Nicholas G. Schlegel on Edgar Wallace and the Krimi Genre
- "Women and the Gaze: Gender, Power and the Look in ZIMMER 13" (13 min) - a video essay by film critic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas
- "Krimi Masters: Harald Reinl and Alfred Vohrer" (14 min) - a video essay by film historian and author Samm Deighan
- German and English trailers for all three films
- Reversible cover artwork
